It is difficult to state how late surgery can be performed and yet achieve some func tional recovery, since the outcome depends on a variety of factors, such as type, extent and location of injury, age of the patient and additional injuries. However, based on clinical experience, brachial plexus surgery more than 12 months after the injury is not likely to give neither any significant nerve regeneration nor func tional recovery distal to the elbow due to the neurobiological events. Primary care of the injured patient Associated injuries in patients with a brachial plexus injury are common. Fifteen per cent have life-threatening injuries to the head, thorax, abdomen and large vessels, whilst about half of the patients have fractures in the long bones of the extremities, and spinal injuries are seen in five percent.
